Who is Jason O'Hara?

Jason O'Hara is a New Zealand based visual artist working across a variety of disciples including photography, painting, sculpture and new media. He lives in seaside community of Breaker Bay, Wellington, with his wife and three children.

Jason has been a full time professional creative since graduating from Wellington Polytechnic School of Design in 1989. For 20 years he has designed brands, packaging, exhibition spaces, websites and communications for some of New Zealand's top design companies (Origin, DNA and DesignWorks) while gradually building a reputation as an artist and photographer.

Currently he balances his work as an artist with working part time as Design Director for Origin Design (where he was a partner for nine years).

Much of Jason's work explores the idea of capturing heritage - often working with old worn objects. "I enjoy exploring the notion that each generation is part of the continum that is the human race. It is important that we preserve aspects of our heritage for the coming generations and I like to use both images and objects to do this. I love working with old objects - to me they have stood as slient witness to the past - enhanced by wear and tear. An old worn hand tool for example is impregnated with sweat of it's owner, the dents and marks that each use has left tells the story of it's life."

His work has won numerous national and international awards and has been published internationally including Graphis annuals. He has exhibited group and solo exhibitions in Auckland and Wellington and has been a judge in the New Zealand Best Design Awards.
